The animals represented in this drawing were all painted by the illustrator for children Cecil Aldin. A founding member of the London Sketch Club, Aldin was known for its caricatured animal representations and was published alongside literary works by Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling, among others. A child's room with the Wightwick manor, in the West Midlands, is adorned with a frieze that includes several Aldin farm animals, including a mother hen with her chicks and a funny duck line running.
