The naive quality of the lines of this drawing refers to the pair of old mechanical toys representing the picking of the apples that inspired it. These are small pieces among a large collection of objects dating for most of the 20th century, now preserved by the National Trust at the Hardman’s House from Rodney Street, in Liverpool. This elegant Georgian property is authentically preserved in its state of the 1950s, after having served as a house and photographic studio as a prestigious portrait photographer Edward Chambré Hardman and his wife and business partner, Margaret.
