Artists craved for winning the prestigious Rome Prize. Thus, the creation of the mural, "Views from Italy", echoed the contemporaries’ keen interest on the subject.
The Dufour workshop' designers have been inspired by Constant Bourgeois’ engravings for the landscapes, and by Joseph Vernet’s paintings for the characters.
